Disposable electrosurgical pencil is mainly used in electrosurgery procedures. Through the usage of electrosurgical pencils, the surgeon can control the bleeding via radio frequency alternating current. Usually, the surgeon can adjust the cut or coagulate setting through the electrosurgical pencil’ s push buttons. Disposable electrosurgical pencils are available with either push-button or rocker switch controls to accommodate the surgeon's preference. Surgeons can hear and feel the switch engage, preventing accidental activation of the device. Slim and lightweight, tapered ergonomic design, streamlined design. Slip-proof handling and water resistant rocker or push-button switch. Switch and buttons designed for smooth activation. Equip with a range of monopolar cutting and coagulation electrodes to satisfy all users requirements. With hexagonal shape to protect against inadvertent twisting, the electrodes can be locked safely into place and are easily exchanged and replaced. The division of the tissue is generally done by the electrical sparks that directs intense heat to the surgical application site. A maximum current concentration will be generated by the surgeon through this effect. The surgeon generates the electric spark by holding the electrode slightly a bit from the body tissue and thus, a large amount of current is produced in a short time period that vaporizes the tissue. Fulguration ( also regarded as spray) and coagulation( pinpoint) are the 2 types of coagulation. In the pinpoint coagulation, the surgeon usually holds the electrode in direct contact with or away from the tissue. Fulguration is a type of non-contact coagulation method where electric current sparks from the active electrode to the body tissue. Usually, the surgeon holds the electrode a few distance away from the body tissue, thus the delivered radio frequency current creates a spark across the airgap which is in contact with the tissue. Less heat is generated. It creates coagulum instead of cell vapourisation. When the body tissue comes in touch with the electrode, the procedure is known as desiccation. Through this contact, there is a decrease in current concentration. Drying of body cells happens, thus forming a coagulum. These monopolar cautery pencils serve the purpose of cutting the tissue and controlling the bleeding which leads to coagulation at the body surgical site.
Tips for Using Disposable Electrosurgical Pencil
Beware of non-sterile packaged disposable electrosurgical pencils and it is highly important to check for Validated ETO sterilized packaged disposable electrosurgical pencils ( Sterile barrier packing systems). Through the sterilization process, the pencils are sterilized by the ethylene oxide in the cycle that kills the microbes. The disposable electrosurgical pencils are meant for one time usage and should not be resterilized. Prior to the usage of the pencil, it is better to confirm that the electrode supplied with the pencil is fully inserted. The insulating sleeve of the electrode must fit securely inside the disposable electrosurgical pencil. Only the operator of the active electrode should activate it by hand or foot pedal to prevent injury to sterile team members. Properly provide a ground to the patient to avoid burn site. Select a current frequency as per the surgeon’s suggestion. If the skin presents with cuts, lesions, scars or other types of skin disorders, an alternative site for pre-placement should be selected. The skin should be free of skin lotion, blood, prep solution and debris prior to applying the Patient return electrode. The patient return electrode must be applied to skin that is dry and clean to assure complete contact with the skin. Properly inspect the correct installation and placement of the disposable electrosurgical pencil to the generator. Improper installation can result in injuries. It is always recommended to set in low power generator settings to attain the best surgical outcomes. To activate either cut or coagulate mode, depress the button or end of the switch which is labeled for the desired effect. Damaged and defective electrode electrosurgical pencils should not be used as it poses serious injuries to both patient and surgeons. There are chances of electrosurgical injury as when the electrode tip comes in contact with the non-targeted tissue, the active electrodes get inadvertently energized. Coupling is one of the most common defects that occurs during the surgery. Upon the current delivery, when the electrode tip is prone to contact with the metal instruments. Avoid placing the disposable electrosurgical pencils near flammable items as it catches fire when it is in an active state. Examples such as spirit, alcohol formulated skin prepping solutions and oxygen rich environment. While the electrode is not in use, place them in an insulated holster instead of leaving it in the surgical field. Therefore, this prevents the burns to the surgeon and as well as the patient. It is always highly recommended to clean the electrode tips of the pencil frequently.Due to the eschar build up in the electrodes, it should be completely wiped off with a sponge. As long as the eschar builds, the impedance increases, thus contributing to flaming or sparking of the eschar. Cleaning the electrode tips with scratch pads should be avoided as the scratches pave the way for increased eschar buildup. The safe usage of the cautery pencils are mostly dependent on the factors such as well equipped knowledge, prior proper training undertaken and the extreme care taken by the surgeons and the fellow assistants.
Match with electrosurgical generator(Unit), radio frequency generator(Unit) and other high frequency equipment. These devices are designed to be used as accessories in conjunction with those electrosurgical units and electrodes. These devices are single use supplied sterile. Check plug matching on generator base and connect. Press CUT/yellow button for cutting and COAG/blue button for coagulation. Maximum voltage is not be exceed 90KV peak. The disposable electric surgical pen is used during common surgical operations to cut and cauterise human tissue, and consists of a penlike shape with a tip, handle, and connecting cable for electrical heating. The first stage of the redesign involved ergonomic research, so the team could understand which areas were a priority to improve the performance of the device. The ergonomic styling needed to be addressed to make it more comfortable and better balanced during use. Industrial designers developed a shape that could be well supported in the hand while rotating at different angles, with materials that gave sufficient friction to prevent slipping. Lighter soft materials were chosen for the connecting wires, which also helped improve comfort and the overall balance of the device. Heavy wiring in the previous device had caused over-balancing problems. Feedback from surgeons suggested the cutting devices were prone to sticking to bodily tissues when cutting, causing an unpleasant burning smell. In order to overcome this, we explored special high-temperature biochemical coatings and selected a high-conductivity, non-stick coating that offered a better non-stick blade solution than Teflon. This coating was able to greatly reduce adhesion and odour problems. It also created a special structural design for the device, making the cutting tool free to be adjusted and extended according to the type of tissue it was cutting. Other similar devices on the market had tried to tackle this problem by allowing the blade to be pulled out for greater length, but surgeons had found these products lost stability with the blade moving within the device. As the device was to be disposable, it fully explored safety options to avoid re-use.
Different Models of Disposable Electrosurgical Pencils Have Different Surgical Effects
Disposable electrosurgical pencil is a medical device used to fulgurate, coagulate, cut or dissect biological tissue by the applying electric current. It uses radio frequency alternating current. Disposable electrosurgical pencils are versatile and can suit all operating needs as they come with universal size connector that makes it compatible with most branded electrode tips. Disposable electrosurgical pencils are used in all surgical disciplines. Some of them are cardiothoracic, Neurological, Gynecological, Orthopedic, Cosmetic and as well as certain Dental Procedures. Cautery electrodes are available in different shapes and sizes depending on the surgeon’ s requirement. Disposable electrosurgical pencils can be operated either by hand or foot and are reusable and also come in disposable variants. Disposable electrosurgical pencils give surgeons the ability to control cutting and coagulation settings by buttons or switches. We are committed to be more efficient in operation and to minimize the possibility of post-surgery injury caused by our products. We use 3mm trocar instead of 5mm trocar because it is more beneficial to both surgeons and patients in laparoscopic surgery with the benefit of reducing tissue damage, wound infection, port-site herniation, and skin scarring. The recovery time and post-surgery pain can also be reduced by using 3mm trocar compared to 5mm trocar. Therefore, we have developed a new disposable laparoscopic handle with an electrode to fit 3mm trocars better. A new disposable handle is introduced for laparoscopic surgery; features lightweight, hand control, and small volume, which is with a better grip and an easier control during an operation.
Precautions for Disposable Electrosurgical Pencil
Disposable electrosurgical pencil is widely used in clinical practice. It uses the high-frequency and high-voltage current generated by the effective electrode tip to heat, cut and stop bleeding when contacting body tissues, so as to achieve the separation and solidification of body tissues. It has the advantages of thorough hemostasis, convenient operation and shortened operation time. The contraindications mainly include patients with pacemaker installed, contact with combustible materials, and other contraindications. Patients with cardiac pacemaker installation: high-frequency electrosurgical pencil can not be used in general, because the electrosurgical pencil current will interfere with the operation of cardiac pacemaker, making it work abnormally or even stop. Electric arc will be formed when the surgical electric knife is used, and flammable materials will burn or explode when encountered. Therefore, flammable materials should be avoided in the surgical area. Mannitol enemas are forbidden in intestinal surgery to avoid explosions. When using iodine and alcohol to disinfect the surgical area, towels and surgical film can be spread before alcohol is completely dry and volatile, and alcohol cotton balls should be removed from the operating table in time. Repeat use of disposable negative plate is prohibited, and cross-infection and burns should be prevented. At the same time, the smoke and particles produced by the electric knife are harmful to human body, so they should be removed in time. In addition, can not blindly increase the output power, to prevent increased body tissue damage. After use, the eschar on the electric knife head should be removed in time to keep the electric knife clean and dry. Avoid washing the electric knife with bubbles directly, or it may be damaged easily.
Disposable electrosurgical pencil , this is a relatively common medical instrument used in surgery. The main function of the pencil is to electrocut tissue and electrocoagulate blood. There are two kinds of disposable electrosurgical pencil , respectively hand control and foot control. The yellow button on the manual pen represents cutting and the blue button represents clotting. There is no button on the foot control pen, but there is a color display on the foot switch, where the yellow pedal represents cutting and the blue pedal represents clotting. Evaluate whether the patient is suitable for the use of electric knife, select the appropriate brand of electric knife according to the operation, and check whether the power supply and electrode cables are broken and metal wires are exposed. Select and check the negative plate, check the wire and chuck; Choose the size and shape of the appropriate negative plate (15KG infants should choose special plates for infants), check the adhesive force of conductive glue. Assess the patient's skin, select the appropriate site to install the negative plate and connect the negative plate plug to the machine. Connect the electric pen with the machine, start up the self-test, show that the plate is installed correctly without alarm indication, adjust the output power. After use, correctly shut down and remove the negative plate, check the skin below the plate, and clean the electric knife and pen with wiping method (no blister washing). The electrode can be sterilized by high temperature and high pressure method (134℃ 3-5 minutes, 121 ℃ 10-20 minutes). Disinfection with ethylene oxide: after packaging, put the medal in 16-24 hours, and can be used after degradation in the air environment for one hour. Soak in 2% glutaraldehyde for 30 minutes and rinse with normal saline (using this method will affect the service life of the electrode). Before using the electric knife, the tool head should be installed before checking the electric knife loop (energized). Energized is also a secondary disinfection process. It is recommended to choose surgical accessories that can be sterilized at high temperature. Sterilization at high temperature and high pressure (134 degrees Celsius) is more effective and efficient. For example, electric coagulation forceps can be disinfected at high temperature, hand control knife can be disinfected at high temperature.
